Agropolychim and Proton Sign Contract for Third Ammonia Storage Tank
Following its long-term strategy to expand production and strengthen its position as a key logistics hub for the delivery of ammonia via maritime transport and subsequent inland distribution, Agropolychim has signed a new agreement with Proton Ventures to design and construct a third tank for liquid ammonia with a storage capacity of 12,500 tons. This facility will be the first in the world to comply with the latest Dutch safety standard, PGS-12 (2024), which sets higher safety requirements for the operation of such facilities.
The new storage tank is a key element of Agropolychim’s logistics expansion plan, aimed at doubling nitrogen fertilizer production and meeting the expected rise in ammonia demand over the next 5–10 years across sectors such as agriculture, energy, and transportation. Once completed, the project will increase the company’s total storage capacity to 36,500 tons, ensuring a reliable and efficient ammonia supply for both internal operations and domestic and regional markets.
Another important element in the implementation of this strategy is the upcoming delivery, scheduled for the period August—November 2025, of 100 new rail tank cars for ammonia transport, manufactured by the American company Greenbrier. This new rail fleet will provide logistical independence, ensure reliable deliveries, and enable the company to achieve greater flexibility and operational efficiency in serving its customers.
At the beginning of 2025, Agropolychim completed the conceptual design—commissioned to the leading engineering company Casale, Switzerland—for the construction of a modern nitric acid plant with an annual capacity of over 350,000 tons. This facility will increase the production capacity of the nitrogen fertilizer line to 1.5 million tons per year. The new plant will also generate green energy, with commissioning planned for the end of 2029.
All of these large-scale investments—with a total budget exceeding EUR 250 million over the next five years—strengthen Agropolychim’s strategic position as one of Europe’s leading fertilizer plants with carbon-neutral production, establishing the company as a key platform for low-carbon fertilizers and ammonia in Southeastern Europe.
